Fishing/Camping at Cape Lookout, NC

in #outdoors7 years ago (edited)

Last summer my brother and I took a trip to Cape Lookout,
an Island on the southern tip of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There is a lighthouse and a few cabins, you can only get to the island by boat, but that is about all that is on the island. It is a protected seashore and it’s sister Island the Shackleford Banks boast a large number of wild horses. I took some photos to document our trip.
We took the ferry from Harker’s Island, NC and they allowed us to carry all our gear for $5. The ferry ride round trip I think was $13 each. DSC_0502.JPGWe stayed for two nights and planned to surf fish, fish in the sound and flounder gig on foot. The weather was phenomenal as you can see in the photos and we had a beautiful ferry ride in. DSC_0483.JPG
We first got settled into our camping spot which was about a quarter to half mile hike from the sound side of the island to the ocean side. We made camp and got organized for our first night of flounder gigging. DSC_0523.JPGMy brother works for a LED lighting company and a coworker gave him some parts to build the lights for walking and we made the spears out of steel rods and dowels we bought from WalMart. We fished the next morning for Speckled Trout and had some success which was a relief as we were skunked our first night floundering.IMG_20170610_083812.jpg We then fished during the day in the ocean and again gigging at night. We repeated this cycle until we had to flee our fantasy back to our jobs but I have provided some photos to show you the wonders of this amazing island. Sun Set.jpg Let me know if you have any questions about how we caught the fish, what we used, info about the island, etc. Thanks!

Great post and great pictures. Welcome to Steemit!

That trip sounds like a dream, man. It would be fun to spearfish for flounder. The speckled trout are beautiful. Do you eat the fish? If so, what species is better eating?

Please consider using the #myhuntingfishing tag for fishing posts in the future. Upvoted and resteemed! Tight lines!

I updated this post to include that tag. Thanks so much for the tip. I love fish and flounder is my favorite out of the species we caught that weekend. The trout is a little gamey but it is delicious as well especially when marinated. The flounder, even people who aren’t big fish fans can eat flounder it tastes similar to chicken.

Awesome! Sounds delicious! And, thanks for including the #myhuntingfishing tag. We hope to gain some delegated Steem power in the next week or two and have even better upvotes for great content like this.

Can you still volunteer to be the lighthouse keeper ?

That's a good question. I am not sure, but I gotta check that out.
