New Mercy changes on Overwatch. - My Thoughts
I am a pretty big fan of Overwatch when it first came out. I played it quite a lot when it first came out and enjoyed it extensively. I never really managed to get into the higher ranks in competitive but I put in quite a few hours regardless. One of my main gripes with the game was that the character Mercy was under powered and had no reason to really exist once Ana was added to the game.
Sure, Mercy had the ability to revive downed players but her play style felt really weird when you were better off hiding some place rather than contributing to the fight. Ana had none of these issues, outside of a higher skill floor Ana not only had more potent healing she was also able to put enemies to sleep.
So not only was here healing better, she was able to greatly impact how much damage can be done. Simply put, sleeping players do less damage. Not only that, but Ana was harder to pin down and actually kill while Mercy was pretty much helpless. Mercy was basically worthless on any real playing field because Ana was just an obviously better choice as a healer most of the time.
I told myself that if "Blizzard ever did decide to address the problem, I would come back to see how it is."
The problem was addressed and the effects are very positive.
I wasn't expecting that Blizzard would actually address the issues. Now the question is, have they gone too far? I don't know for sure, but I do think that she edges out Ana at this point. However Ana still brings a greater degree of potent healing than Mercy. Ana still is a really solid character.
But Mercy has become a monster who will no doubt dominate 100% pick rates. I was sure she needed changes but I didn't think she would get this much. Blizzard supposedly intended to nerf her revive ability and in turn made it so Mercy revives more players over the course of a match than ever before.
What did they do to "Nerf" Mercy's Resurrect ability?
They modified her resurrect ability from a fairly simplistic area of effect Revive to something called Valkyrie. While under the effects of Valkyrie you have the following effects.
Caduceus Staff: Mercy’s healing and damage boost beams now affect all allies near the targeted teammate, and the staff’s effective range has been extended
Caduceus Blaster: Granted infinite ammo, while simultaneously increasing damage and fire rate
Guardian Angel: Increased range and movement speed
Resurrect: Cooldown is instantly reset when Valkyrie is activated and reduced to 10s after the initial cast
Hover: Mercy gains the ability to fly freely, at increased movement speed
Regeneration (Passive): No longer interrupted when Mercy takes damage
Holy hell, that's a huge amount of bonuses!!
I went from being pretty helpless to even a slightly skilled Genji to becoming a Pharah counter. Her pistol continues to fire without a need to reload and her ability to resurrect instantly resets. Guardian angel apparently now also has invulnerability frames or something going on. I have AOE healed my team from obscure corners out in the middle of nowhere using the chain healing effect.
I honestly feel like they could have done half of this stuff and Mercy would have been fine! The new changes pretty much shut up any complaints I had with the character. Now I wonder when she will begin to receive nerfs.
And I also enjoyed some good old fashioned Free For All.
A mode of play that they added is the classic standard for first person shooters, free for all! Its pretty fun.
I had a pretty interesting experience playing FFA. I feel like my first 10 or so games of it were against much lower skill players than myself. Once I got the hang of it I absolutely dominated, it didnt even matter who I played the game as. Could be a Mercy and solo a DVA or Roadhog in 1v1 lol
I went one match as Mercy the entire time and got first place. Then bam I was kicked out of the match and suddenly connected to another group of players. All of a sudden they were actually fighting back!
This might actually mean that, much like Quick play, there is a hidden competitive rank that they use to match you up with people of equal skill.
Many complain of the new mercy to me does not seem to me weak, that reviving the whole group was a great advantage against any skill if it was, mercy now has to be more cautious when it comes to reviving. I bet it's a matter of adapting to it.
I see the exact opposite in terms of her res ability now. If your res is not on cooldown, then you are not getting the full benefit of the ability. Its become, a situation where there is much less strategy and its more about making sure you res as many people as possible during the entire match.
The only time strategy has come in for me while playing has been when I need to decide who to res out of a group of 3 dead players. Tanks > Healers > DPS.
Of course I give you the reason friend, but tell me if the resuscitation of the mercy group did not have much advantage against the opposing team, mercy in many games to revive became the MVP of the game in part is good to appreciate what they do the healers, I say that now when using mercy there is to adapt to your new skills and use the res whenever you can and in the order you said you are right, finally I think the reuse time is 30 seconds. Now the games do not depend so much mercy, but still have in focus many enemies. And in my opinion Mercy is still a very powerful healer.
I feel like it depends on her even more now than ever. Being able to erase a pick every 30 seconds is insanely good.
if you are right, and I also believe that mercy will not be the only one I receive rework my example is winston its special in many cases does not work. They are something like league of legens.

I remember playing a game of offensive mercy and still outfragging some people once upon a time! LOL, I was hoping the update found some way to make her even hotter though.
I agree with u before i saw mercys literaly just hiding in the corner and healing but the old mercy revive just wasnt fair u could win a game but at the last second she revevies everyone and turned it around i like they changed but yeah they overdid it
Mercy is still dominating in pick rates in higher levels of play, i feel the change in her resurrection was desperately needed but still has quite a bit of tweaking to go through as these were massive changes
Yay another fellow overwatcher :D I'm a mercy main myself and I'm in love with her changes too. I hated having to stop healing my team to hide every time I felt a potential teamwipe coming on and preferred tempo resses so this change was really perfect for me, plus I'm actually getting more resses and healing done overall so there's really been no downside!
It's great to see overwatch posts on here, I hope you do more in the future :) I actually posted some of my mercy 2.0 gameplay on highlights on here too if you wanna check that out :D great post!
Your write up is impressive. .
