The Great Horned Owl
The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a common bird of prey in North America and highly adaptable to its environment. They cover a vast range from dense woods, to prairies, and deserts.
They are determined hunters feeding on a variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. They are undeterred by bad odours and quills so have no trouble hunting skunks and porcupines. Even other owl species aren't off the table.
They are early nesters laying 2-3 eggs in late February in the abandoned nests of hawks, eagles and ravens.
This particular individual was spotted at the Steveville Campground in Alberta. It was actually one of two Great Horned Owls that we spotted during our time there. We saw them both multiple times and heard them calling to each other in the night.
