That is a damnable thing to do indeed, and it makes photography a pricey hobby.

You'll hate me for saying this, but wrist straps are a great invention 8-P.

Taking out the batteries, rinsing with copious amounts of distilled water, and then letting it dry for a long time can sometimes recover a camera from such rivery misfortune.
