Wifi Gun! Does it work?

in #palnet6 years ago (edited)

I just survived 4 days of really, really bad internet connection that made my real life work really miserable. While looking for some cheap DIY solutions to boost wifi signal I came across this:

Now, before I try to get my hards dirty, I was wondering if any of you smarter guys know if this thing actually works or if it's just some clickbait bs. I tried looking on the comments of the video for the answer to my question but most of them are people having fun and making jokes so... not much of a help.

So yeah. If it works let me know. And let me know if there is anything you would change/improve.

Sort:

Ironically I have been doing some research into wifi antennas these last few days, and I actually did see that, and immediately knew it was probably bullshit, because all of the elements and the reflector are connected together. Then, I actually saw a video with the same question you posed as the subject!

Lemme look it up.

TLDR, it's actually a type of yagi antenna, and while it technically might work, the "boom" isn't isolated from the reflector, essentially causing a short, which might just blow out your wifi.

The largest metal disk is the reflector, and it's attached to ground, the outer shielding of the coax, and the second disk, the boom, is attached to the center of the coax. You just gotta electrically isolate that disk, such as with heat shrink or plastic washers.

I'm not sure if the measurements are exactly right in the one you mentioned though. But, Andrew McNeil, who is the same one who did the video above that I linked, also did another video, where he adapted and simplified the design to be used in a "can", which results in an extremely powerful directional antenna.

Nice! Thanks for the videos, they will be useful research material !! I guess I will go for the can can thing, that guy looks way more legit !

Looks legit :D
Better not waste your time on that.
How about some simple repeaters?

Well, I want to stea...ermhh... borrow internet from neighbours so dunno if a repeater would be of help. I just need an antenna to increase the reach of my wifi. DIY is more fun but i i cant make it work I will probably buy one from amazon !

I'll also be waiting for the feedback.

Russian are smarts, provably it work! Hahaha
