Backup Your Library Credits!

in #partiko6 years ago (edited)

LBRY is a great platform for sharing videos and pictures that compensates creators while remaining censorship free. Library Credits (or LBC) are the backbone of this service. LBC is a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin. And just like Bitcoin, your LBC is stored in a wallet built into the LBRY client, and your access to this wallet depends on you having the secret file. Thanks to MEGA and a built-in Ubuntu tool, you can easily back up this file automatically (and even quadrupally encrypt it) to ensure you will never lose access to your LBC.

Prerequisites

This tutorial assumes you have the following things:

  • An internet connection
  • A working Ubuntu installation
  • The LBRY client (Download Here)
  • The MEGA sync client and an account (Sign up here)
  • Déjà Dup (If you're running Ubuntu, it may be pre-installed as "Backup". If you don't have it, find more information here or search for it in your distribution's software center.)

A Note on Security

All files stored on MEGA on encrypted with your password. Unless disabled, all transfers are also sent over SSL. The backup program may also prompt you for a password; this is recommended as an extra precaution. Most importantly, before continuing with this guide, encrypt your LBRY wallet directly though the LBRY client.

MEGA

First, open MEGA settings and navigate to the Sync tab. Click Add and point MEGA to a new local folder, any location will do, but remember it for later. Also point MEGA to a new folder in your cloud drive. Once complete, click Apply and close the window.

LBRY

Open your LBRY client and under wallet click Backup. LBRY will display the path to your wallet files; remember this for later.

Backup

Open Déjà Dup (or Backup) and add the LBRY wallet folder form the last step to the list of Folders to save. Depending on your setup, you may want to remove the home folder to conserve space on MEGA. If you are backing your home folder, make sure to add MEGA's backup folder to the list of Folders to ignore. Set the storage location to the folder you configured MEGA to sync. Finally, go to Scheduling and enable it with whatever frequency you prefer. Once enabled, you may be prompted to install additional packages. Simply follow the on screen prompts to complete setup.

That's it!

Déjà Dup and MEGA will now automatically archive your LBRY wallet regularly!
