The Daily Bread
The dirty, disheveled child crept from the shadows toward the garbage bin once the sliver of light closed from the back door of the restaurant. His eyes were too big for his face and wore a haunted expression. His stomach cleaved to his spine. The too large pants, ripped in several places hung loosely on his bony hips held up with pieced together packing twine. Approaching the bin he looked left and right to see if any other scavengers where lurking. He was small, much smaller than many of the children vying for the local scraps, but occasionally a drunk showed up and pushed all the children aside.
By some miracle, no one else was loitering about. The boy sprinted to the bin and scrambled up to peer inside. He saw a partial loaf of bread, reaching unsteadily over he swung an arm vainly to grab the wrapper. Victory! The edge in reach, he pulled it up to him and clutched it to his breast. His brothers and sisters would eat one more night. Slipping down the side of the bin he hit the ground running just as the door to the restaurant began to open once more.
