Needing to tranquilize a stray. a rare situation for us

in #pets3 months ago

We only use this method as a last resort. However, in this case this dog was extremely aggressive and unapproachable. We had no other choice and we are very careful to choose the right dosage. In this case we used a tranquilizer that was far less than is intended for an animal of his size but the end result was still good.

People that have known and seen this dog for years reported him to us and he had previously been friendly to the point where they trusted him around their children unaccompanied but over time he started to become very aggressive to the point where they had to chase him off. They contacted us because there really isn't anyone else to call because Thailand has no animal control. If they had called the police they simply would have shot him dead so I am glad they contacted us.

We feared he might be rabid and if an animal has rabies, in most cases it isn't curable and the dog has to be put down. We would have done this humanely of course, but fortunately the tests for rabies came back negative.

The above pictures are grainy because we couldn't get anywhere near him without him attacking and even after we darted him we still approached with protective gear on. Thankfully the tranquilizer worked and he was asleep the entire time we transported him.

While negative for rabies, unfortunately he was positive for kidney disease, anemia, cancer, parasite infestation, blood parasites, and mange. All of these are treatable but it is going to be a lot of work with a lot of time involved. Thankfully the owners and vets at Bangkok Krabi Animal Hospital are animal lovers and they don't charge for anything other than the materials and they charge us that at cost.

he also has microfractures in his back leg and this, according the vet is often caused by kicking of the animal or having things thrown at it, which according the neighbors is what had to be done once his attitude changed to vicious. We don't really have the funds for this or the time but we don't give up on any animal here in Krabi. We took a vote and it was unanimous that we would do all that we could to cure him. We knew what the result of the vote would be before we even did it though, that's the kind of people and organization that we are.

It remains to be seen if we can return him to the area we found him because we don't understand what it is that caused the massive change in attitude towards his caretakers. Sometimes dogs who are in pain will just lash out at everything near them because they perhaps believe that the other creatures are the cause of their pain.

Hopefully with some TLC, the attitude adjustment will take care of itself. It's going to take a while, but we will not give up on this, or any other Krabi animal in need
