20 Gallon Aquarium Setup

The tank is filled and has been running for about two days. The temperature is good. Time to transfer the fish out of the smaller five-gallon tank.

Let me take you through some steps. The 20-gallon aquarium, lid, light, gravel and some plants were what I had when I was a kid. It was boxed up and stored for probably the past 20 plus years. Before I did anything, I cleaned it all with hot water. I’ve never used any type of detergent. I was under the fear that some would be left behind and get into the water. That can’t be good for fish. So, hot water and elbow grease will do the trick.

Once it’s all clean, I put in the gravel, plants and filter. I then fill it up with water and add the heater. Then turn on the heater and filter and let it run for a day or two.

My boys are excited, it’s time to move the fish. We have two goldfish and two zebra tetras. They are swimming around and exploring their new home.

Before we continue, let’s tackle an issue. Some say he has no understanding of water and that he can catch fish with his tongue. All we know is he’s called…. wait! My mind wondered on to another topic. Back on the subject. Some say you should never mix goldfish with tropical fish. And, yes, there is a truth to that. But my experience has shown it is possible to mix the two. I’ve always kept the water about 73-74 degrees Fahrenheit. Nearly all my fish have lived for years and were healthy.

So, probably in a few days I’ll take my boys to the pet store and pick up some tropical fish and a few snails. I'll pickup a background, as well. I may even get some live plants. I’ll give an update when that happens.

For now, here is the aquarium with the four fish we currently have.

One more issue to discuss. As you can see from the picture, the tank is close to windows. Keeping an aquarium next to windows in direct sunlight will encourage algae growth. Best bet is to keep the blinds closed when direct sunlight comes through.
