I often say look at the heart or the intentions behind the act. It may be a good act but for the wrong motives or wrong intent. It may end up being self-serving. Sometimes there are multiple layers of motives and one must know which are real and which are only for display purposes or window dressing. Thanks for sharing @krnel
Many motivations can merge into making a decision indeed.
