Within the inner sanctums...
The Besakih Temple or Pura Besakih is known as the Mother temple. Describing the entire complex as huge would be almost an understatement.
Besakih is said to consist of 86 main temples and 18 others, and is Bali's biggest and holiest site for local Hindu worshippers!
We happened to visit in the evening and as it is located 1,000m high on the slopes of Mt Agung, the light was wonderful and soon the mists drifted in over the entire complex...

and yet when you arrive within the innermost temples, you forget you are within such a huge complex
This is one of the inner temples
It is peaceful and calming
The evening sun shone golden at this particular time

and you are never short of Balinese icons like the tall graceful 'penjor' ~ the curved bamboo pole with young coconut leaf decorations
The Balinese gates topped with traditional architecture
All rendered in beautiful mysterious silhouette in the evening sun

It looks like a very ancient temple.
Yes... there no official figures but some proof seems to date it back 2,000 years!
Maybe it is?!
I think even older... :)

Thank you, @sherylneil! It was very quiet and peaceful when we were there - exactly what you would imagine... :)
Awesome pics! I'm a big fan of older architecture, the older the better. It's always amazing how beautifully designed some of them are.
Yes, you are right... I am too - lovely to visit these...
Thank you, @pandorasbox!
