If you're looking into lenses, I recommend the 50mm f1.4. Fairly cheap prime lens that is great for portraits... Also really fast for low light shooting and has a fairly quiet/fast focus.
I usually shoot with my 50mm f1.4, a 70-300mm f4-5.6, and a 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6.
The fly picture was taken @ 300mm with a clip-on Raynox macro adapter. Long exposure... used a strobing flashlight to artificially light up the fly while the shutter was open.
