Wilson's Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus

These are amazing little seabirds, actually the Storm Petrels are the smallest of our seabirds, weighting about 32 grams (just over an ounce) and live most of their lives at sea. They come to shore only to breed in cracks in rocky cliffs, where they raise their young by feeding them in the dead of night. Sneaking into the nest at night seems to be their safest approach, and though chick mortality is high, the survivors weigh considerably more than the adults by the time they fledge.

I like the dual reflection in this photo.

Both parts of their common name have interesting origins. The petrel name comes because they seem to walk on water, like Saint Peter, as they patter for food on the surface. They "storm" part comes because sailors used to consider them a divine warning of an impending storm.
They are tough little birds, despite their dainty appearance, surviving major storms by flying inthe trough of waves, and feeding there. Wilson's Storm Petrel is the most common Storm Petrel seen from shore in the northeastern U.S. though is is much easier to find at sea.
Good birding. Steem on.
