GEODES - Natural Beauties, But... What Exactly Are They?

in #photography7 years ago

For Christmas I received a Geode from my father. I wasn't entirely sure what it was, or what to do with it, but it looks beautiful lit up by a couple of small candles.

I have since learned (courtesy of WikiPedia) that geodes occur in both sedimentary and volcanic rocks as a result of something called chemical precipitation.

The resulting geodes are hollow, vaguely spheroid, masses of mineral matter. When split open you can see the crystalline structures that have formed within.

The most common mineral found inside geodes is quartz, but there are many others.

Interesting Geode Trivia

  • Geodes are the 'State Rock' of Iowa
  • They are known as 'Potato Stones' in Somerset
  • Geode means 'Shape of the Earth' in Greek
  • The World's largest geode is located in Ohio and is actually a cave with a diameter of 35feet

Do you know more about these incredible geological structures? I'd love to hear more about them.
