Did you know that the Monarch Butterfly is poisonous?

They sure are. They have a poison called Cardiac Glycoside stored in their beautiful body.

Where did the poison come from? It comes from the plant that we most associate with the Monarch. It comes from milkweed.

It seems that the Monarch makes the poison while it is in its larva stage by eating the milkweed, and it is then stored throughout it's life.

What happens if one were to ingest this toxin? If enough was consumed, say ten monarchs, you would have a heart attack. You would go into cardiac arrest.

It turns out that the Monarch Butterfly is a real heart stopper.

Who knew?
