My trip to Greece, Peloponnese this summer

Along with a lot of small trips in Austria and the short trip to Mittersil and Krimml and Bad Gastein this summer I have also been to Greece for 2 weeks in June this year. I enjoyed it very much and I had a very nice holiday enjoying the warm sun of the south. Together with a girlfriend of my mother I visited the lovely small town of Koroni wich is located on the first of the three fingers of the Peloponnese.

Summer, Sun, Ocean, Relax

The main purpose of this holiday was for pleasure and relaxing as well as enjoying the nice sun and water of the ocean. As I have a very stressful job and also my leisure time is busy with a lot of appointments for photo shoots and hiking tours I choosed to have some nice days only for my relaxing in Greece. Most of the time I really enjoyed it very much and did a lot of relaxing on the beach. But still there where some times when I was in hurry to catch the best spots for my blue hour Photography there in Greece.

The weather was really fine in june we didn’t had a day which we couldn’t use to stop by the sea for a swim or just for relaxing in the sun and listening to the waves.

On my first morning I got up early to catch the sunrise over the ocean. At our spot we could only watch the sun rising over the ocean to see a sunset over the ocean I had to travel some kilometers with the car to the other coast of a Finger of the Peleponnes. Picture: Florian Glechner.

The perfect thing of our beach was that it always had some spots with natural shadow, because there was a cave in the sandwall wich was about 10 meters in height. I enjoyed most of the time in the sun and in the ocean and also cought a sunburn, but when it was to hot at noon I either went into the shadow of the cave or went up to our house to spend some hours away from the hot sun and to eat and drink something.

Easy traveling by Car

As we also had a car down there it was easy for us to travel around and discover the beauty of Greece. I visited quite a few nice places down here and was impressed of the beauty of this county. As is notice the light and the sun appear different in Greece than in Austria, it has some kind of different light temperature here.

Because the light was very hard over the day, producing a lot of shadows in my images I decided to do the photographing in the mornings and the evenings when possible. I still did a lot of pictures around noon time when we were visiting the castles of Koroni and Methoni. But we always stayed there till sunset so I captured both of them also at the blue hour and in different condition of the light.

Nice Food

Although I was cooking most of the time at our apartment on some days we enjoyed some nice food in the restaurants at evenings. In Koroni there are some nice restaurants at the beachside. The two I can recommend is the first and the last restaurant on the beach promenade. They have always a lot of people dining there and the food was fresh and tasted very good. I ate fried Calamari and tzatziki. At the evenings you were able to watch the lucky fishermen bringing in their fresh caught fish.

Methoni Castle

A Very popular tourist destination at the Peloponnese is Methoni Castle, wich is an old and big Castle directly on the sea. Methoni is very impressive but unfortunately it was already closed when we wanted to visit it. We went there in the evening when the sun was not so hot anymore and wanted to visit the castle, but the castle was already closed in the afternoon around 4pm. So I only had the chance to take pictures from the outside of the castle. That’s why it took a look for possible spots for my photography and found a nice wall of stones that where poured into the sea to protect against high waves. I positioned myself there with my Camera and the tripod and waited for the sunset and the blue hour. I really love the pictures I took there and I even ordered a 45x30 cm print of it wich is now hanging in my room.

Finikounda

My next stop in Greece was the beautiful small town of Finikounda. In Finikounda you can find some nice restaurants directly on the sea and you have a nice view to the island of Shiza wich is protecting the bay from heavy storms. In the evening you can watch fishermen bringing in their nets and sell the fish to the local restaurant and shops.

Pylos

Pylos is also a very nice small town in Greece and worth a visit. Pylos also has a Castle which protected the former inhabitants thousand years ago. You can still find rests of the castle in the north and the south of the small town. You can find a lot of nice restaurants in Pylos as well as a nice small harbor with sailing yachts. Most parts of the small town where built into the mountain so you have to hike a lot if you want to see the whole town and its beautiful buildings. Only the main Place of the town is even with the sea level.
