Back Roads Drive: Growing Season (Original Photography)

in #photography8 years ago

Howdy!

It's been a bit of a week so, as one does, I headed for the back roads and a temporary reprieve from life. There's nothing quite like driving down a gravel road at sunset and seeing the rural landscape and green, growing things.

Rolling Rows
There is a saying around these parts that the locals use to judge whether the corn crop is on schedule: "knee high by the 4th of July." The fourth is coming right up, and the corn is already taller than I am in many fields. I didn't see the perfect cornfield photo tonight, but I'll get one next time.

"Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley Grow..."
The heavy rainfalls, while helpful in some ways, also have their adverse affects. Some of the low-lying fields looked more like lakes, with significant crop damage. I'm not sure what happened in this next one. It looks as if the farmer tried to till an area that was too wet, then went around it. The scene sort of reminds me of some child's scribble-art.

Great Spot for a Pig!
If anyone knows what the thing in this next photo is for, please let me know. It looks like it might have something to do with drainage or aeration, but I'm not sure. Maybe it's to protect this lovely mosquito breeding ground!

The "Thing"
Now, it's back to trying to the reality of life and all the pressures that come with it.

Agh, you've got me totally curious. I asked Jeeves "corn field aid"...nothing. Yellow and blue cone in corn field...nothing.

I totally love your photos!! I think you should find the farmer and ask him/her :)

Thanks! I don't know who owned the land. There were three farms on the horizon in different directions! I'm guessing it's part of a drainage system (air intake to allow better flow?) but, really, don't know.

Orrrr maybe some sneaky cows put it there?? Lol

We had a ton of rain here and I feared it would kill off parts of our garden. I'd hate to own a huge farm and have that much water damage. My own corn is taller than me and already growing corn. This makes me miss South Dakota and its back roads with all the pretty farmland.

I went out earlier today, and there are portions of fields that have become legitimate ponds. one field had a small lake, complete with frogs and a swarm of bloodthirsty mosquitos.

I lived in Watertown, SD For awhile, but really like the west side of the state. The Badlands and Black Hills are both very photogenic. Did you get to visit those, when you lived in SD?

Loving the bottom photograph in particular @fotosdenada. I enjoyed sharing your evening drive.😊

Thanks! I still wish I knew what the "thing" was for.

Yeah. I bet there's someone on Steemit who knows the answer to that @fotosdenada. Getting them to see the post is the challenge though. 😊

Do you "know" anyone who's into homesteading? They might be able to make an intelligent guess.

I'll post on Facebook. Some of my "friends" are farmers...

Excellent idea @fotosdenada. Please let me know if yuo find out what it is. 😊
