One Year of Photos 6/365 - Happy Canada Day! - Original work

in #photography7 years ago

Welcome to a photo a day for 365 days, here is day 6!

So it is Canada Day today! In celebration I will be sharing more then one photo. If you have not seen previous posts, I have challenged myself to post one photo a day for a year of my favourite original work. This will also include some info about how I got the shot, gear used and editing.

These shots are from the same shoot as my photo yesterday, if you want to check out yesterdays post there is a link at the end. I also wanted to say if you have been following along that you so much, it means a lot to me! I hope you are enjoying the first days of this journey.

I shot these photos with Canada Day in mind, I wanted sparklers and fire and fun. Shooting the sparklers was THE BEST. I recommend trying it if you have not done it before. Here are some quick tips for shooting with sparklers:

  1. Be safe! You and your models need their eyeballs.
  2. Shoot at dawn or dusk, when the light is low and almost gone you get some awesome results.
  3. Get more sparklers then you think you need, I ran out and I was so sad!
  4. When it gets dark set you open your aperture as much as your lens allows.
  5. Bring beer... haha kidding, but seriously we did.

We shot all of these outside in an old school yard. The sun sets here around 10pm so we had to start pretty late since I just wanted to shoot in low light. I shot the entire session on my Canon 6D and 50mm sigma lens, the appeture was anywhere between 1.8 & 2.8 for all the images. I used only available light and exposed to the sparklers. I edited all of these in Lightroom and Photoshop. I did the exposure & colour correction in Lightroom. With exposing to the sparklers my subjects were dark so in almost every photo I really brought up the shadows, it was amazing how well that worked. Then in photoshop I added more sparks and smoke. Comment if you have any other questions about how these were made :)
