The Great Egret is one of nature's most strikingly elegant birds. Appearance and Identification
Standing about 3.3 feet tall with a wingspan that can reach up to 5.5 feet, the Great Egret is an impressive sight. Its pristine white feathers and long, sinuous neck give it a regal presence, especially when seen in flight, gliding over marshes and estuaries with slow, deliberate wingbeats. During the breeding season, these birds develop long, delicate plumes on their backs called aigrettes—once highly prized in the fashion industry.
The bird’s sharp, yellow bill is a perfect tool for spearing fish, frogs, insects, and even small reptiles, which make up its diverse diet. Its long black legs and feet are ideal for wading through shallow waters as it hunts patiently, often standing motionless for minutes at a time.
Habitat and Range
Great Egrets are cosmopolitan in distribution, found on every continent except Antarctica. In North America, they are common in wetlands, marshes, rivers, ponds, and coastal shores. These birds are migratory in colder regions, flying south in the winter to Central and South America. In warmer climates, they may be year-round residents.

Breeding and Behavior
Great Egrets typically nest in colonies, often with other wading birds such as herons, ibises, and spoonbills.
