Amelia è un piccolo borgo in provincia di Terni, nella regione centrale italiana dell'Umbria; la leggenda narra che fu costruita intorno a un antico forte di collina, conosciuto dai romani come Ameria e che deve il suo antico nome ad un leggendario fondatore, il re Ameroe.
Secondo Catone, Amelia è la città più antica dell'Umbria e fu fondata intorno al 1134 aC, quattro secoli prima della fondazione di Roma.
Amelia è particolarmente nota per le sue mura, alcune delle quali potrebbero essere datate alla fondazione Amelia. Erano formate da enormi blocchi di pietra collegati insieme senza malta con incredibile abilità ed erano destinati a difendere l'accesso all'acropoli. Oggi, la vecchia Amelia all'interno delle mura, che è più accessibile attraverso la Porta Romana, è una città medievale ben conservata.
Il centro della città è la Piazza del Duomo dove si trovano la cattedrale e la Torre Civica con un'altezza di 30 metri. Fu costruito originariamente nell'872 e completamente ricostruito in stile barocco dopo un incendio nel 1629.
Merita una visita la chiesa di San Francesco, iniziata nel 1287; essa si trova in Piazza Vera e al suo interno presenta un chiostro e un convento; importante anche la chiesa di Sant'Agostino, consacrata nel 1288 che ha una facciata che è un esempio di architettura romanica con una sovrapposizione gotica.

I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Amelia is a small town in the province of Terni, in the Central Italian region of Umbria; it grew up around an ancient hill fort, known to the Romans as Ameria and owes its ancient name to a legendary founder, King Ameroe.
According to Catone, Amelia is the oldest town in Umbria and it was founded around 1134 BC, four centuries before the founding of Rome.
Amelia is especially known for its walls, parts of which may date to Amelia's earliest days.
They were formed by huge blocks of stone connected together without mortar with incredible skill, they were meant to defend the access to the acropolis. Today, old Amelia inside the walls, which is most accessible through the Porta Romana, is a well-preserved medieval city.
The center of the city is the Piazza del Duomo where the cathedral and the 30-meter-high Torre Civica (Civic Tower) are located. It was built originally in 872, and totally rebuilt in Baroque style after a fire in 1629.
Worth a visit the church of San Francesco, started in 1287, is in Piazza Vera, with a cloister and a convent; also important the church of Sant'Agostino, consecrated in 1288, has a facade that is an example of Romanesque architecture with a Gothic overlay.

This perhaps that oldest historical site you have posted about (at least for as long as I have followed you). I am a complete history nut and you have to understand the effect on me when I get to know another piece of history. I think I have goosebumps even as I read it.

Ci sono passato al volo solo una volta da Amelia, nel periodo in cui facevamo gli stand in Umbria, era un po' fuori delle nostre rotte tradizionali, ma mi ha dato un'ottima impressione, come del resto l'Umbria intera, e se non ricordo male, è una delle tue regioni preferite.
Eh si, diciamo che dopo la mia amata Puglia è la mia regione preferita! Ottima memoria, bravo!
L'Umbria per molti versi mi ricorda la mia regione. Ruralità e borghi medievali molto belli.
Sei toscano vero? In ogni caso io impazzisco per l'Umbria e mia moglie per la Toscana.. alla fin fine confinano e in effetti hanno molte analogie, anche se io trovo l'Umbria più "rustica" :-)
Sono toscano sì.
In effetti sono regioni che si assomigliano sotto molti punti di vista: la cucina ed i borghi sono in molte situazioni affini.
