An Alley in the City
The concrete steps, worn smooth by time and tread,
Rise past the houses, rust-stained, painted red.
A red bicycle rests, a quiet, forgotten soul,
Beside a small, handwritten sign that reads "No Smoking",
Fulfilling its unspoken role.
The greenness overflows, a vibrant, dense embrace,
Of hydrangeas, wisteria, and maples in this hidden place.
They climb the slopes and shield us from the sun,
A living curtain, the wild and city-won,
Where childhood games were lost and won.
The scent of laundry soap on gentle summer air,
Hanging on balconies, so clean and so clear.
The metal pole stands tall, a silent, static friend,
To telephone lines and the stories that transcend,
This memory that will not end.
This quiet corner, bathed in the softest light,
A sanctuary from the city's neon night.
In this old street, I find my childhood heart,
Where every step, and every stone, will play its part,
In this nostalgic, lingering work of art.
