Ulithi Stick Dance Man Train

Our Navy Band flew from Guam to Ulithi Atoll in spring of 1978; the occasion was the Outer Islands High School graduation. The admiral, his wife, and the other VIPs all hung out in the Peace Corp building (school), while we hung out 'with the people' and played shitty ditties. But, the audience dug it, so we were hamming it up. In fact, Hammerhead took off his shoe and played his trombone with his toe -- always a hit. The admiral looked down on that, but the rest of us all thought it was great. I doubt the admiral could do anything like that. We ate betel nut on the flight home; everything was closed, so there was no meal that day for us. There was nothing to drink except some Cutty Sark, so we drank that and got sick.
