Labs are too kind-hearted and aproval-seeking to be the alpha.
On the other hand, many small dogs have quite a large amount of spirit. I know a man with a terrier name Barney. While walking in the wilderness with Barney they happened upon a large Brown Bear sow and its cubs. The bear charged the man to defend her cubs and the terrier charged the bear! The terrier proceeded to weave in and out of the bear's legs biting and barking loudly. The bear was not nimble enough to swat away the attacking terrier. Eventually, the bear retreated and the man called off his dog. As the defeated sow bear watched from further up a hill, the man decided to teach the bear one final lesson. He instructed Barney to chase the bear. Barney darted away barking madly. Seeing the tiny horror advancing relentlessly toward her, the brown bear gathered her cubs and ran away at full speed and never looked back. The battle was over.
