Helicopter ride over the Great Barrier Reef #2

in #photography8 years ago

Historically, the reef was used by the Aboriginal people of Australia as well as the Torres Strait Islander people. They have been living in this area for more than 40,000 years whilst the Torres Strait islanders for about 10,000 years respectively. The reef has been a intricate part of their livelihood and culture as a result.

The reef itself stretches for over 2000 Kilometers. This vast expanse of coral reefs is home to tens of thousands of species of fish, coral and other marine life. It's considered as one of the world's natural wonders too!

So far, the helicopter ride has been staggering. I just couldn't imagine how the reef would look from the sky. It really blew me away.

It's only from the air that you start to get a sense of the monumental scale of the reef and how beautiful it is to see it's formations from a birds eye view.

The land formations almost look like countries, and my view, like an astronauts from space.

All in all, the helicopter ride was for 1 hour. Endless amounts of coral reefs were visible for the whole time. I was also able to see a lot of sandy beaches including the Palm cove.

My favourite shot would be this one. This network of coral reefs itself looks like a living organism. Of course it is home to thousands of marine animals.
