How to make money with photography - Part 2 / Selling your photos on Twenty20

in #photography7 years ago

This is part 2 of my guide to earning money with your photography. If you haven’t read it yet, be sure to do so here.

Yesterday I told you about stocksites where photos can be sold to make you money, today I’m telling you which website is my favorite and why it is better and more fun for you to use. If you take lots of photos, either with your phone or camera, this is a must read!

Twenty20 is a US based company which operates in two different ways. They have a website where customers can buy photos either through a subscription plan or just make a single photo purchase. Twenty20 customers can be either major companies or small blogs. The subscription based reward is $2 per photo and single purchases can go into the tens of dollars. This can add up to quite a bit of money every month. Payouts are made every month through Paypal. I have already made a couple hundred of dollars by selling my photos here.

Authenticity is why they have so many customers and why YOUR photos are in high demand!

The second part of their operation is where we get involved. Although we can do everything on the website, the easiest interaction can be found on their mobile app. It mixes traditional stock with social networking I often describe as a mix between Instagram and Tinder, which sounds like a crazy mix…I know. You can make your own customized profile and make social connections just like on Instagram. Potential buyers can then find your photos through the keywords you use. Frequent sellers also get access to customized themes to upload and sell even more photos.

Their biggest fun factor though is through their themed challenges. Every day a new 48 hour competition starts where any user can enter a single photo tied to the specific theme which can vary from ‘People on the subway’ to ‘Flowers in spring’. As soon as the challenge has started every user can cast a vote in the style of Tinder. Every single photo that entered the challenge will be displayed one at a time with the possibility to vote up or down. Voting down doesn’t really do much, voting up adds a vote. After 48 hours the voting is closed and there are 4 different type of ‘honors’ to be awarded. Based on the votes the photos will either be given a TOP20%, TOP10% or TOP20 award. To keep things fair and avoid abuse of the voting system, the winner will be picked by a jury and will win a nice amount of prize money. The higher your photo ranked in the results, the more exposure it will get to potential buyers when searching for specific themes or keywords and the higher the chance to get picked by the jury as challenge winner.

Voting on photos in challenges in done in Tinder style. Voting up adds a vote, voting down just skips to the next. You will be notified on every vote on your photo and you can check the current ranking at any time

Lastly, they have their Signature Collection where only a limited amount of photos get added to. They add around 10 photos a day and these get really good exposure on their website. Photos can get nominated by other users and once they are nominated they will be put in front of editors who select the best ones. Everyone can nominate 3 photos a day to keep things fair.

Getting added to the signature collection gives an amazing boost to the odds of selling your photos

Just like on Steemit, it definitely pays off connecting with people by voting, liking and commenting on their photos. The more likes and comments you leave the higher the chance you have getting nominations. The system works so incredibly well that you always feel rewarded for the time and effort you put into it. I have been using this service for over a year now and besides making a good amount of money I have made some truly amazing connections through it!

There are a few other sites that offers similar features, like Eyeem and Snapwire. These however, simply lack the fun and community. That's why Twenty20 still remains my favorite and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to make some money out of photography or is like me a little tired of the amount of junk on Instagram and the lack of features.

Go ahead and sign up, download the app and start selling! Feel free to leave your Twenty20 username in the comments and I'll follow you and give you your first nominations!
