A Church, a Chapel and a Lot of Lettuces!
A certain day I decided to take a path I had never investigated. This is how it went...
First, after walking 30 mins or so, I arrived at the Church of Gião, which is the name of a very small town near Vila do Conde.
So far so good, I was enjoying the scenery. The sun was shining. A perfect afternoon.
Church of Gião, in Gião - Vila do Conde
This is a simple little church but they all do have their details worthy of appreciation. Here are a few close-up shots.
Saint Anthony of Padua, also known as Anthony of Lisbon
At this place I had only two choices, I could go back, or try to find a new way back home. "Oh well," I thought, "the weather is nice. Why not?"
I decided to venture into the unknown.
After a short 15 min walk, I got myself in the middle of what appeared to be an Invasion of Green Things... Except these were not Aliens, but Lettuces. (I think.)
Lettuces, Lettuces and even more Lettuces.
Enough Lettuces to feed an army! (Of Aliens?)
After this strange encounter of the Lettuce kind, things got a little weirder. The only route available was a small and obscure path between a couple of walls. So, I took it. I had no clue if this would even lead to an exit...
Thankfully, it led me right to the centre of another nearby town, Malta. And to my surprise, I had passed through here many times, but I had never realised that this little dark corner between these two houses was a shortcut to Gião!
And here's the reason why I never noticed that small nook and cranny. It's right in front of a big cross.
And that cross? It is placed in the middle of a road, at the front of the Chapel of Saint Apollonia.

From here, I already knew where I had to go, in order to find my way back home.
I hope you have enjoyed this little trip. Feel free to throw in a comment or two.

I love finding unknown routes and seeing what I can find @trincowski.
The Church of Gião is very pretty with those lovely blue and white tiles.
Do you know why the town is called Malta? That's an unusual name and the Chapel of Saint Apollonia does look very similar to a Maltese Chapel.
Hi there!
Yes, its name is based on an ancient Religious Order: The Order of Malta
This Order still exists nowadays. Here's their Portuguese page: Ordem de Malta
Thanks for your comment.
Very interesting @trincowski. Thanks for the link. 😁
Are you Portuguese? I love Portugal! I've only been to Lisbon but I'm planning to go to Sintra too! Malta looks interesting too!
Lettuce paradise!!! Love it!
Thank you for sharing!
Ah ah! I don't advice you to go to Malta. It's a very small town with barely nothing interesting to see. You'd be wasting your time, really.
If you come to this neighbourhood, I suggest a visit to Vila do Conde, which is 10 kms away and it's a fantastic city!
I only go to Malta because it's close to home... and I have to go somewhere during my walks. :-)
Sintra is a better destination. You can check the Castle, once you're there, and you can visit its interior! That's always a good tour!
Thank you for the tip! I'm planning to go there again in spring.
I heard that Sintra is amazing! Many of my friends have been there already 😊
Muito bom :)

I certainly enjoyed the adventure. Is the designs on the wall of the chapel painted?

I don't know the process, but they seem to be mosaics, already painted at the factory.
Ohh yea that's true. I looked at it closely and I am seeing it now
