Photomask market area Mycronic is the only supplier of production equipment for the manufacture of advanced photomasks for the display industry. The photomask market opened strongly in 2016. During the second half of 2016, activity decreased and for the full year the market declined for the first time since 2012. This was due to the transition from LCD to AMOLED technology where several LCD factories were rebuilt for AMOLED. During the period the factories are rebuilt, there was some lapse in production capacity resulting in a temporary lower need for photomasks. Another factor that temporarily reduces demand for photomasks is that there is a production deficit of advanced AMOLED displays. To meet the demand for AMOLED displays, manufacturers therefore focused on existing models and put fewer resources into R&D. The assessment is that the market rebounded in 2017 as the new factories ramped up the need for photomasks for AMOLED. The initial assessment for growth of 11 percent in 2017 has been revised upward to 16 percent, to USD 730 million. In the fourth quarter of 2017, the utilization degree of Mycronic's mask writers remained stable at a level similar to the third quarter. In the longer term, the assessment is that the new G10 factories that are under construction will increase the need for complex photomasks, primarily in China.

Within PG, the trends encompass a technology shift from LCD to AMOLED for mobile displays, development towards higher resolution, ever larger TV displays, as well as new display applications. All this is driving demand for photomasks and placing new, higher demands on the photomasks used in production. In response to these trends, the photomask industry invests primarily in capability, i.e. new opportunities. This is favorable for PG, which is also reflected
in a full order book for 2018. In addition, today’s photomask market is about five times greater than it was just over ten years ago, so current investments - mainly in new P10 mask writers - do not significantly impact total capacity.
