Poetry: Waiting

Minutes had become hours
Hours had become days
Days had become months
Months had become years

Sitting by the window
All day long
Talking to myself
Looking at the door

Hoping you'll walk in
Listening to the radio
Watching the news
Waiting and still waiting

No sign of you
No sound of your footsteps
No knock on the door
No bell ringing

Finally there was a knock
Running with enthusiasm
Smiling through my teeth
I opened the door

I met my worst nightmare
A letter from the dead
Reading each word carefully
My mouth dropped open

All these time had passed
Waiting for so long
Hoping to see you again
Only to be left disappointed

The war had ended
Your carcass was all that was left
Opening the parcel that came with the letter
I confirmed it

It was you
I couldn't believe it.
But what was there not to believe?
My heartthrob was lying dead

Dead in front of me
Uncontrollable tears rolled down my chics
The fight for civilization had taken you away
I sat down on the floor speechless

I still remember your deep voice
Saying the words ‘I love you'
Telling me it would be the last fight
Promising you'll come back

You kept your promise
But you weren’t specific
I should’ve asked
Alive or dead?

You lay there, lifeless
All our plans together
Our life together
Has finally ended

Slowly I opened my eyes
I saw you looking at me
At my horrified face
I stared at you in confusion

You went for the war
But you fell ill
So you and a few others were exempted
But couldn't come back until the end of the war

I held your hand
Hugged you tightly
Making sure that I wasn't dreaming anymore
That it was real this time

I had finally woken up
From my worst nightmare
This time you were actually standing there
Standing there---- alive.
