Happy Christmas to the Pagans

in #poetry8 years ago

Happy Christmas to the Pagans down the street
Yuletide greetings to you when we meet.
Our tree has a cross yours has a star
Coexist is a sticker you keep on your car.

Mr. and Mrs. Pagan so civil so fair
Hardly anyone noticed you were even there.
A house as normal as any other
Subtle differences at holidays, hardly a bother.

Lights and wreaths decorate our street
Your house so plain, so tidy, so neat.
We avoid you every time we see you outside
Looking for the most convenient place to hide.

Historical evidence proves the baby was there
We ignore the things we are forced to share.
Some claim we took your celebration tree
Your winter festival, your ancient deities.

Like children who fight over a brand new gift
It’s mine, no, it’s mine, it is a petty tiff.
This day comes by each and every year
Whether we like it or not we are continually there.

Whose day is it really, to whom does it belong?
A pagan celebration, The Baby and a song?
We have a choice to fight or to care
I choose to recognize this day with flair.

A smile and a greeting to my neighbors one and all
No matter the season, in spite of inferred gall.
Merry Christmas to you, Is what I will say
Knowing full well that yuletide greetings are coming my way.
