Candles
Sitting in the dark, lighting candles in her heart,
Staring in the mirror, trying to get a glimmer of hope from her reflection.
Crying in the night, for someone to hold her tight, and show her true affection.
She lit a candle each day inside her to drive away the darkness,
and through the years, thousands of flames became a resounding chorus,
giving courage and hope to face a faceless future,
to find another flame that burned bright like hers.
Years go by as she grows old, memories made before they’re told,
but in each passing day, a new candle she lights to say,
“I’m holding on to forever, waiting for you.”
Not wanting to start another fire, She just wants to go higher, and leave it all behind.
Trapped inside herself, she breathes for someone else, to come and loose the shackles of her tormented mind.
A cold wind blows and no one knows all the candles that she’s lit,
or the poems of longing that her trembling hand has writ,
while her true love waits… in a second life.
Just as life gave birth in dust and dirt,
so a piece of her lost but found,
came into view from not where she knew,
like a flower budding from the ground.
The orbits they followed and the sweet drink they swallowed,
brought them both intoxication,
and through each others light, discovered in the night,
they partook of the tempting libation.
An altar drenched with love withheld, a sacrifice to each were both compelled,
to give to the other on that fateful day.
A touch and a look, a kiss was all it took,
to surrender to their hearts’ subtle sway.
And from that moment, they were released from their torment,
as they clung one to another.
The darkness dispelled from eyes that had long welled,
and the candles became one as together they discover.
