Russia has lots of inner problems, and Putin's regime tries to distract people from it. And of course, Putin wants to defend Assad's system similar to the Russian one.
Yeah, I'd struggle to believe that Russian media is telling the truth and the rest of the world's news is lying; but it's possible.
Russian television for the past 15 years turns the population into stupid sheep and entirely succeeded in this.
