The spinal recovery is surprising.


It is a fact that spinal cord injuries, for the most part, remain a point where the body simply cannot recover, but this limit could be beginning to disappear, because scientists at Northwestern University developed what may be the most advanced model of human spinal cord ever created in a laboratory.


A miniature version grown from stem cells, a living tissue capable of almost perfectly imitating what happens inside the human body and the most impressive thing is that they not only created this structure, but intentionally damaged it, reproducing real injuries such as cuts and compressions to observe exactly how the tissue reacts.


The result was surprisingly realistic, cell death, inflammation, formation of scars that block nerve regeneration, exactly as occurs in a serious injury in real life, but here came the most surprising part, the researchers applied an experimental therapy known as “dancing molecules”, a type of treatment that when injected forms a microscopic gel composed of nanofibers that imitate the natural structure of the spinal cord.


These structures create an ideal environment for neurons to regrow. The result was something that until recently seemed impossible, the scar practically disappeared and the neurons began to regenerate, forming connections again as if the tissue were being rebuilt. And this is not totally new, in animal tests, a single application of this therapy was enough for severely injured mice to walk again in a few weeks, but now for the first time this is being tested in human tissue, although still in the laboratory.


And there is a detail that makes all this more powerful.


These organoids can be created from the patient's own cells, that is, in the future it could be possible to test personalized treatments before even applying them to the real body. We may be rewriting the boundaries of human recovery.
