The last song that I heard was "How Great Thou Art"

This post is an entry to a contest in #powerhousecreatives, hosted by @zord189

Here's the first verse to match the pictures above and below!

"O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed"

Some history about this old song;

"How Great Thou Art is a Christian hymn based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg (1859–1940) in Mönsterås, Sweden, in 1885. It was translated into German and then into Russian. It was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own".

"It was popularised by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades.
It was voted the United Kingdom's favourite hymn by BBC's Songs of Praise. "How Great Thou Art" was ranked second (after "Amazing Grace") on a list of the favourite hymns of all time in a survey by Christianity Today magazine in 2001".

"When through the woods, and forest glades I wander and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur and see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze"

This refrain is sung between all of the song's verses;

"Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art"

Some more history;

"The inspiration for the poem came when Boberg was walking home from church near Kronobäck, Sweden, and listening to church bells. A sudden storm got Boberg’s attention, and then just as suddenly as it had made its appearance, it subsided to a peaceful calm which Boberg observed over Mönsterås Bay".

"According to J. Irving Erickson:
Carl Boberg and some friends were returning home to Mönsterås from Kronobäck, where they had participated in an afternoon service. Presently a thundercloud appeared on the horizon, and soon lightning flashed across the sky. Strong winds swept over the meadows and billowing fields of grain. The thunder pealed in loud claps. Then rain came in cool fresh showers. In a little while the storm was over, and a rainbow appeared".

How this song influenced me;

A great old song that also had a great later effect in my own life.
I was 19 years old when I had to travel with my girlfriend to my estranged father's house. We wanted to get married, but as I was not 21 yet, I had to get my father's permission to get married and he had to sign the official forms.
He lived in another part of the country far away and we hitchhiked to his town.

In the meantime my girlfriends parents went and opened a case of kidnapping against me at the police station. She was 16 and her parents didn't like me because they said I was a long haired rebel with a motorbike Lol
Well, as we arrived in the town I was arrested and thrown into a jail cell. Some neighbor was playing this song "How Great Thou Art" constantly and I could hear it through the cell window.

Of course the case was withdrawn and I was set free about two weeks later. We got married a few months later and had three children. Unfortunately the marriage broke up 18 years later.

But the song stayed with me and many years later, at the age of 40 I had a meeting with the Spirit of the Great One and I became a qualified preacher.

Just a short story here, as I didn't want to bore you with the details, but all that I can say here is that music is certainly a catalyst for change!

We hope that you have enjoyed the post and thank you for the visit to a blog of @papilloncharity

I love that song. When i was a kid we had an Elvis record from when Elvis was really into his gospel phase and it was moving. To this day this song kind of gives me the chills even though I am not a religious person.

Thank you and it is indeed a great song that has seen so many having a go at singing it.
I like the calmness and the feeling that everything will be all right that it instills in me.
I respect your views and one doesn't have to be religious to be moved by the song.
Blessings!

I love your story!!!
Keep writing.

Thank you and glad that you liked it!
Blessings!

Ooooh, you're a jail-hound! LOL!

Seriously, great story. All of our past experiences comprise who we are today, for better and worse. It's great that you can make such a great positive out of it.

"When through the woods, and forest glades I wander and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur and see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze"

That's one of my moments of zen, too. I love being in the woods, listening to nothing by the wind through the leaves and birds in the air.

Hahaha, I've had a couple of scraps with the law my friend, but thankfully never sentenced to a imprisonment.
But slowly over time I spent more time in nature and the result was a calming of my restless soul.
Our pasts certainly shape our futures.
Blessings!

Music definitely molds who we are, how we recall specific memories, a lovely hymn that changed your world and path Stephen.

You most certainly did not bore us with any details! Wow! Great story!
And boy can Carrie Underwood sing! Doesn't hurt that she has legs for days.
I loved this post.

Oh, I have many stories like this one my friend, but life has certainly always worked out for me somehow.
The song that I heard was sung by Wanda Jackson before she became famous, but I think that the version by Carrie is also great.
Many artists sang the song and even Elvis had a go at it.
Glad that you loved the post my friend and thank you.
Blessings!

Thank you kindly!

I remember this song from when I was a kid and we sang it in church. Carrie and Vince Gill do an outstanding job with it! The audience couldn't stop applauding. She's got a real gift in her voice! I didn't know the history behind it, so thanks for including that.

Good luck in the contest!

Thank you and it is indeed a song that I love.
Carrie does a good job of the singing and of course many other artists also sang it.
I also love to look at the history of the songs and I think you should Google the history of "Amazing Grace" that you will also like.
Blessings!

Its a great song and a great post very interesting to read why it has special meaning to you

Thank you JJ an amazing song indeed!
We all have some interesting stories and thought that I would share this one Lol
Blessings!

It was a story well worth sharing :)
