We call those vanity plates. The auto registrars make it into an extra way to bring in tax dollars. There are vanity plates for colleges, universities, sports teams, and any interest you can imagine.
My auto registration is coming up, I am going to look into getting a vanity plate for my auto.

It was @Anarcotech that gave me the idea a few weeks ago. It's a great way to personalise a Promotional Vehicle and they would look great driving around town. I am now looking into the cost of buying a pair of Minis and have the #Steem Logos in vinyl printed on them. They will look cool driving around together in the U.K.

I applied for my "STEEM" specialty (vanity) plate today. I originally wanted "STEEM ON" but the limit on the plate was 5 characters. The Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has to review it to make sure it is not offensive. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that no one in this state has put "STEEM" on a license plate. It could be about two months before I get the plate. I will post a picture of it when it arrives.
This is the first vanity plate I have ever purchased. I have benefited greatly from SteemIt and STEEM. This is a great way to show my appreciation and promote STEEM.
