Why Is The Grass Always Greener On The Other Side?
Most people know the feeling that classmates, colleagues and others in the circle of business always have smarter clothes than you yourself have. As a rule, they also seem a little bit more beautiful, richer, happier, more fun and smarter than you are.
But why is that? Why are you never satisfied with what you have?
We have always wanted others' things
The word language about the greener grass and other similar has occurred in different places in the world, or it has spread from country to country.
But the global spread of the proverb indicates that people around the world tend to seek what others have, more than they themselves have.
Desires and envy are feelings that have bothered us since the dawn of the day. Instinctively, we can not help believing that what others have is better than what we ourselves have. It is basic psychology. We are simply decorated to believe that the other knows better. That is why we think the grass is always greener at the neighbor.
It is typical that you use proverb and regular expressions to express words of general human feelings.
Man is born to imitate
Man is born with a mechanism that makes us look at what other people do and have, as something that is worth imitating. Human beings hung to mimic each other is the foundation of cultural communities. We constantly orientate ourselves to others and perceive each other as models of what's right.
To imitate, is not only behavior.
This also applies to things that are worth having. What the other has is valuable, you think, like what the other sees when he looks up into the air is interesting.
We imitate to communicate
Our hanging out to abe after is in some cases an advantage. For example, we would not be able to talk together if we did not learn language as a child to imitate others.
The fundamental inclination to imitate others is the source of eternal conflicts. If I want the neighbor's bike because I assume it's better than my own, the neighbor would probably not think it's a good idea.
Another disadvantage of the eternal imitation is that even in the case of the neighbor's bike, it loses value when it is in one's own garage. Then one begins to envy another neighbor's bike.
Thank you for reading
Ooo this is such a wonderful read.. you were spot on with the reality that we never get satisfied with what we have and always look towards others and fall into baseless comparisons about who is happier or who is wealthier..
Thank you my friend!
"Keeping up with the Joneses" bro, I live in a State that has one of the highest debt rates in the nation because everyone is trying to imitate their neighbor. Very cool post.
Thanks buddy!
Nice article @tradewonk. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted and resteemed
Thanks buddy, apprecatied
Envy is a pretty powerful emotion. We need to learn to be happy with ourselves first, then happy with what we achieve and what we own. Modern media bombards us daily with the things we should have in order to be like our neighbours. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others. The only person you should be competing against is yourself...striving to be a better person.
Well said! Thank you @cecicastor
empathy is a important part in human interaction, and imitation is part of it, but as well I am convinced that things like envy come from education and the society we live in...think about native tribes, for example they tend not to have posession of material things, if I don´t need it anymore another one can have it..no envy necessary....the envy in our society is a big problem...but it´s not instinctively, a destructive thing can´t be in the core of our feelings I believe, because it would have held humans back from evolution
