Scientists - 01 - Pythagoras (567 – 497 B. C.)
Pythagoras the Greek mathematician was born in 567 B. C. in the island of Samos, Greece.
From his childhood he had been a very inquisitive and observant person. He was tutored by famous scholars of the day.
After the completion of his education he had discussions with the people whom he met in daily life. He wanted them to share his ideas and thinking.
This particular desire led him to set up the Academy or the Pythagorean School in the Greek City of Carton. He taught ethics, politics, and logic there and his teachings had a great effect on the people not only in Carton, but also in most parts of Greece and Italy.
The students of the Pythagorean School were bound to their teacher by rigid vows and were ascetic in their way of life.
Pythagoras introduced a concept named transmigration of souls. (Rebirth)
The students at his school were taught that numbers and their interrelationships constitute the true nature of the universe.
He had been credited with advances of mathematics, geometry, medicine, and philosophy.
The famous Pythagorean Theorem, that the square of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides, is named after him.
It is an accepted fact that both Plato and Aristotle were influenced by his ideas.
Even in the present scientific world his theories on geometry, mathematics and astronomy are accepted and acknowledged with respect.
Nicolas Copernicus once admitted his indebtedness to Pythagoras, in the presentation of his suggestions that Earth and other planets rotate in orbit around the Sun.
Pythagoras passed away in 497 B. C. at Matapontum, Graecia, Greece.
