Wise quote: The wealthy, the noble, and the poor achieve their glory in the fear of the Lord. Ben Sira 10:22
All the sapiential literature in the Old Testament highlights the importance of the fear of God to live well and achieve true happiness, beatitude as such begins with this spiritual gift. In the Sacred Scriptures, Abraham, Moses, and David, to take a few examples, were chosen by the creator of all things because of their fear of God, despite the problems, they accomplished great feats, they triumphed in all their actions, and they were fully blessed by the Lord, and the memory of them, associated with great glory, still inspires millions of people today.
And everything that happened with these famous leaders had a reason for being so and was not a product of chance, and this is because the gift of fear of the Lord has a very important spiritual meaning in the Bible, and this was already explained by the Sage Ben Sira in his book: "The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord" Ben Sira 1:14. It all begins with the fear of God, Ben Sira explained in his book; in fact, in the Decalogue, given by Moses to the Israelites, the first two commandments refer to the fear of God. Men must fear God above all things, Moses taught, and after that come man's obligations to his neighbor. This is the deepest meaning of the law of Moses, and the master Ben Sira repeated this spiritual truth in other words in his book of wisdom.
This is why Ben Sira shared a quote of wisdom for reflection: "The wealthy, the noble, and the poor achieve their glory in the fear of the Lord" Ben Sira 10:22. No wealth or material fortune can compare to the fear of God, the wise Ben Sira reflected. Men are not important for their money but for their devotion to God. David was a simple and poor shepherd, and God exalted him and filled him with glory, and King David was one of the many examples in the holy scriptures.
With this teaching, Ben Sira then meditated on something very important: in a world where greed and fear as a passion prevail, the gift of fear of God is presented as the basis of education and the social life of men. When men know the gift of fear of God, the society in which they live is prepared for success, as demonstrated by the history of Israel in the Old Testament.
