Crabronidae: Digger Wasps - Grabwespen

English / German
The digger wasps (Crabronidae) are represented in Europe with over 800 species. Most species of the family build ground nests, the females dig tunnels and breeding chambers in the ground. After mating, the females lay their eggs in the chambers. Various insects are caught, stunned and stored in the breeding chambers. Then the females close the nest. The hatched larvae eat the insects, at the end of development the larvae pupate and the adult wasps leave the nest.

I would like to introduce three species:

Cerceris quinquefasciata can be found from June to September on dry grasslands, on the edges of forests or in sand pits. The females dig a passage in the ground at the end of which the breeding cells are located. After laying eggs, weevils are caught and stored.

The rare digger wasp Mellinus crabroneus can be found at the edge of forests or in sand pits. The females of the species dig tunnels up to 30cm deep with several chambers at the end. After oviposition, diptera are caught and stored.

The field digger wasp (Mellinus arvensis) can be found on embankments, in sand pits or in heath biotopes. After mating, the females build a ground nest up to 50cm deep. As food-provision, diptera are caught and stored.
