Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu

Today's morning beautiful hadith is about The Duaa Upon Breaking The Fast

Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa' said:

I saw Ibn Umar holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) said that the Prophet (salallahu alaihi wa ala aalihi wasalam) said when he broke his fast:

"‏ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ‏"‏ ‏
dhahab-aẓ-ẓama’u, wabtallat-il-‛urooqu, wa thabat-al-ajru in shaa’ allaah

"Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allah wills."

(Sunan Abu Dawood Vol. 3, Book 14, Hadith 2350)

In another related hadith, narrated Mu'adh ibn Zuhrah:

The Prophet of Allah (Peace be upon him) used to say when he broke his fast:

"‏ اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ ‏"‏ ‏
O Allah, for Thee I have fasted, and with Thy provision I have broken my fast.

(Sunan Abu Dawood Vol. 3, Book 14, Hadith 2351)

COMMENTARY

One of the most valuable acts of worship a person who is fasting can ever do is to make dua’a to Allah . Note how beautifully Allah has the famous and amazing verse about dua’a Ch:2 V:186 in-between the verses of fasting Ch: V: 183-187, highlighting its honor and status.

In an authentic hadith in Sahih At-Tirmithi, rasulul Allahi salallahu alaihi wa ala aalihi wasalam said:

"Three groups of people whom their dua will not be rejected:

The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader and the supplication of the oppressed person."

And he also said in an authentic hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah:

What the hadith basically means, that if the fasting person who breaks his fast makes dua’a at that time Allah will not reject their dua but rather accept it.

Allahu Akbar, Allah really appreciates it when you make dua’a at such a critical time when you are at the pinnacle of your hunger. You are about to break your fast and the sight of food didn’t divert you away from Allah rather you remembered Allah and made dua’a to Him.

A person may ask, so when exactly do I make my dua? Many of the scholars have said that it is not restricted to a specific minute rather the timing is flexible. They said: you can make dua right before the adhan or right after hearing the adhan and breaking your fast.

It is also from the sunnah of the Prophet to recite the above prayer as recorded in Sunan Abu Daaud.

So brethren, make dua’a during your days of fasting like you have never done before and don’t waste that valuable guaranteed moment when your dua’a is not rejected by losing focus once seeing all that food but take a few minutes aside praising Allah and asking Him for all your needs don't restrict yourself to the prayer above but seek for your needs too. Also beautify your supplication during Iftar (breaking fast) by the recitation of suratul Qadar and give alms in the name of Allah (SWT) which is highly recommend with great virtues. You can also recite the following before breaking the fast:

اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ امنْتُ [وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ] وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ
Transliteration:

Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu [wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu] wa ‘ala rizq-ika aftartu

Translation:

“Oh Allah, I fasted for You and I believe in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance.”

Many of us fasting in Ramadan tend to forget the value of supplication/dua while remaining restrained from worldly affairs and physical basic needs. We miss the opportunity of asking from Allah in one of the most precious times by keeping ourselves busy in last minute preparation of Iftar or its consumption without any duaa.

We should not forget to make duaa for our Muslim Brothers and Sisters any where in the world suffering any injustice and those deprived of joining the Ummah in this Blessed Month of Ramadan to fast together with us enjoying this Blessed Month. May Allah help our brothers and sisters and save them from the tyranny of the tyrants. Let's never forget to beseech Allah to come to their aid and help them at the time of their needs during our Iftar and Sahur
