Marzipan Balls (Marzipankartoffeln)
Since Christmas is just around the corner, and being German, I love all the traditional German Christmas cookies. One of those is Marzipan. I tried my hand at making Marizpan Balls for the first time a few years ago and still make them, except that I no longer stick to making them around Christmas time.
There are many variations to making them, and to name just a few: -
They are a simple combination of marzipan paste rolled into small balls, then dusted with cocoa powder and sometimes cinnamon to resemble tiny potatoes.
Marzipan is rolled into balls and then dipped in melted dark or white chocolate.
The balls are often flavoured with orange or rum before being rolled in shredded coconut
I am going to post a simple recipe here, which you can try, and then you can become creative and add any of the above-mentioned alternatives.
1 cup almond flour
1 cup castor sugar/ powdered sugar
1 tbsp Rosewater or plain water
1 tbsp fresh orange juice
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well
Add rosewater/water, rum or orange juice, as well as the water
Knead well
Form balls and roll in cocoa, hot chocolate powder, coconut, or dip in melted dark or white chocolate.
You can add a small amount of caster sugar to the cocoa, depending on your preference.
Quick and very easy to make! If you like Marzipan, be sure to give it a try and let me know in the comments what you think, please!
