Redneck happens slowly: Confessions of a city boy
I grew up and started my family as a skinny jean, hybrid driving, urban dwelling, hipster city boy. But like most people as little family was growing up we started thinking about weekend getaways and long stays in the mountains or at the beach. We started scraping our savings together believing that one day all our hard work would afford us the chance to buy a weekend home where we could escape the business of the city and get a breath of fresh air and relaxation on occasion. After a while I started realizing that while I was saving the kids continued to get older, and I realized at one point that by the time my I would have enough to by a weekend place our kids would be too old to care about spending time with their parents. So here is where it get interesting. We sold our Urban digs in downtown Atlanta and moved full time to a 425 acre recreational farm closer to Alabama than Atlanta. I figured a little extra drive would be worth what I got to drive home to. That's right, we went from .12 acres to 425 acres. I had never hunted, barely fished, driven a tractor, planted a plant, or raised anything other than a cat or dog. But we did! And while I still wear skinny jean I have found that it's amazing how over time some of the things that were once so foreign to me have no become the norm. I killed my first deer ( a buck ) wearing skinny jean, a v-neck t, and pointed cowboy boots. The funny thing is when you are living the life you realize that a lot of "redneck" is just born out of necessity when nobody looking .
