Love for One Another
26 If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment
to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by
that the sun goeth down:
27 For that is his covering only, it is his
raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep?
and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto
me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.
The "pledge" in this passage is very much like modern-day collateral on a loan, and God wanted His people to understand that He would not be pleased with those who took advantage of the needy by keeping their cloak - usually the only one they owned - during the cold of night.
The Bible enjoins believers to treat one another with compassion and love. From the very beginning, God intended for those who belong to Him to be different from those around them. One of those differences is spelled out wonderfully in the words of Jesus...
John 13:35
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye
love one another; as I have loved you, that ye
also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my
disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Much of the Law Moses passed down to the people dealt with treating others with justice and compassion. The Lord identified Himself as a God who was compassionate and concerned about the plight of the poor and disadvantaged. Let us live in the example and treat one another with love, compassion and caring.
1 John 4:6-8
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us;
he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know
we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is
of God; and every one that loveth is born of God,
and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is
love.
