Apparently we did not know this , as well , and proceeded to sit at the table . My son went off to get the cutlery and the young girl at the the till came rushing over and encouraged us to take the plates to her before we took a morcel , and pay first then eat . We found out that this is quite normal in Brazilian restaurants.

Why do you need to weigh your plate if it's a buffet? Sounds interesting though.
