That 70's show: I shoulda left it in my memories

in #retro7 years ago

Like most people, I considered That 70's Show to be a wonderful sitcom that was actually very inventive at the time it was released in the late 90's. Also like most people, I lost my enthusiasm for the show long before it was discontinued in 2006.

It's pretty awesome when you consider that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher might just be working in a bar somewhere if it weren't for this show because like most people I had never heard of them before this time (Fun Fact: Mila lied on her application, she wasn't actually old enough to be working on the show when it started.)

The show was really funny and inventive and likely had some really talented writers when you consider the simplicity of most of their sets. The show mostly took place in the basement of Eric Forman (Topher Grace)'s basement. Many of the jokes revolved around smoking weed and for me at least a lot of the fun from this show came from the point of view camera angles.

Now here comes the bad part: I dunno if it is just me, but I absolutely can not stand shows these days that have a canned laugh track built in. It was all the rage for 30 years (maybe more) but these days it just seems really dumb. Also, since we now have the ability to binge watch just anything rather than wait for next week's episodes, the humor gets old pretty fast.

If you were a fan of this show back when it was "live" I suggest you do what I wish I had: Leave it in your mind. The revisit actually made me question my taste in TV shows but I suppose this happens with most things. That 70's show was iconic in its time but now, it just seems kind of dumb. I rank this right up there with most TV shows that I have fond memories of such as when I decided to go back and watch Quantum Leap, The A-Team, and also Magnum P.I.. The 2nd time around is a bit of a buzzkill.

I loved this show but yeah today it's a bit hmm let's say weird xD

And why did you have to write that you are going to watch Magnum ... because of that I had a flashback and now I have to watch it again haha.

i already did go back and watch Magnum, and almost immediately regretted doing so. Destroyed a bit of my childhood memories by doing so. don't do it!

Mhhh ok maybe I should keep it as a fond memory of my childhood xD

Yes, canned laughter is really terrible. In some shows it's even worse than in others. I don't know, how anyone could think, this would be a great idea...

But I think you can get used to it. The first episodes will be painful, but after a while you will barely notice it. Hopefully.

This show really started to fizzle the longer it when on. Then by the end when they replaced Eric and all of that stuff, I just gave up on it. I pretty much hate everything done my that Lorree guy these days as it is all crude jokes and the canned laugh track. It was so awesome back in the day to have the announcer say "blah blah blah was filmed in front of a live studio audience".

ha! yeah, the "live studio audience that was guided down their amusement by a laugh track" would have been more genuine

I was never a huge fan of this show growing up, mostly because my parents fucking loved it which put me off from it. Guess it's a good thing since it doesn't sound like it aged well? Then again, a lot of stuff from the late 90s and early 2000's aged like a dirty monkey ass.

A lot of 80s stuff hasn't aged well. I've tried to go back and watch MacGyver... there's some nostalgia points there but I just can't get into it. On the other hand, some of the stuff I watched in the early 90s I can still rewatch and enjoy today. Stuff like The X-Files, Babylon 5, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mystery Science Theater 3000... I still love those shows.

I can't really think of any 80's shows that I was ever into, but I'm not surprises to hear that. It is funny how there's a lot of early 90's stuff that aged great but a lot of stuff in the late 90's that aged like smoked penis with horseradish. Also, as a heads up in case you don't know, the guys from MST3K are still doing their thing, it's just called Rifftrax now.

There's also a new season or two of MST3K on Netflix. Some of the same people, some new people...

i think i was a fan because maybe we didn't have much to watch back then. Streaming stuff on the internet wasn't really a thing yet so we kind of got whatever slop was handed to us.

Yeah, I wasn't really watching much of any TV back then now that I think about it. IIRC, I think all I was really watching was Aqua Teen Hunger Force and South Park. I recall spending most of my nights just rewatching Shaun of the Dead, Boondock Saints and a few other movies I got on DVD. You know, real big dick energy stuff.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force! Love em! especially when meatwad gets a pet rabbit named Nathan and Frylock is forced to .... oh NM, i am sure you already know it. . such great memories. Number 1 in the hood G.

You killed usss. No, I didn't!!! Yesss, you diddd. NO I DIDN"T...Uh, yeah, you did. No, I didn't...Yeah, you freakin' did!

I really miss ATHF, the first 5 seasons were so fucking good. I go back and re-watch the show once a year and never get tired of it.

oh i love that episode. with just your words I recreated the entire scene in my mind. "get over here... or i'll put a cigarette out in your eye!"

By the way, this is totally off topic to what we were talking about. But, if by some chance you're into fighting games, do not pick up the new Mortal Kombat game if you're a completionist. The micro transactions ruin it badly, and either require you to grind 3900 hours into the game to be able to beat certain parts, or pay $6440 in micro transactions to buy the items to clear the entire game.

I'd assume you probably don't get a lot of gaming news in your neck of the woods, and no one is really talking about it in reviews of the game. Figured you might wanna know since you've got that PS4 and I know you've been picking up games lately.

"Frylock, man, you've changed..." Gets stabbed by a knife "Oh, for the better?!"

I try to avoid re-watching it, and luckily just looking at pictures of the show brings a lot of nostalgia by itself. I went through high school watching this show, and some of the character's personalities were similar to people in my (then) group of friends. Even the first time I got high felt just like the show makes it seem. Re-watching it is like going down a wormhole to me.
