It's not completely nonsensical. Plastic is cheap, but tooling is not, especially to the tolerances LEGO requires. They also have better packaging and far better instructions. I would be curious to know what extra costs they bear due to Danish tax law, too. That can't be an insignificant factor. And then there's who-knows-what in import duties and tariffs stateside.

The other big expense Lego have is licensing costs. Huge household names like Star Wars and Marvel don't come cheap, especially when Disney is involved, and there are plenty of other licensed characters and themes in the Lego back catalogue.

paying $100-300 for a few pieces of plastic is def nonsensical. I would like to know what their margins are... 3000%? lol i dont know why they seemd to be cheaper when I was younger maybe because I wasn't the one buying them lol
