"The Important Thing in a Relationship"
Heartbeat is one of Danielle Steel novel which was written in 1991. It tells the story of two people who face the heartbreak of their couple leaving them. Bill Thigpen, is a writer producer of the daytime TV Drama who gets so busy in his work and he starts to do not care with his family. He becomes a workaholic and his marriage collapses. His wife leaves him in the end alone. He decides to stay alone in his life later.
On the other hand, there is Adrian Townshed, a TV production assistant. She thinks her life is perfect with a handsome husband, a good job and money. Her life is like an American dream. Just perfect, until she gets pregnant. She has to face the difficult situation when she is asked to make a choice between the baby or her husband. Since her husband does not want a child. Confused by this difficult choice, Then she chooses the baby and that is when her marriage starts to collapse. After this point, the story takes a new twist, when she collides with a man in the supermarket who is that Bill and being a friend. That is where the story starts. After Adrian’s husband leaves her, Bill always beside Adrian, actually he do not know what has happened with Adrian before. Adrian also get along with his two sons : Tommy, and Adam. Then She accompanies Bill on a camping trip with his two sons.
In the morning, Tommy, one of Bill's sons, is almost hit by a car. Adrian tries to save him and pushes him away, only to be hit herself. She is injured and hospitalized, and risks to suffer a miscarriage. Bill soon learns about her pregnancy and she immediately informs him about everything that has happened. Later, she find comfort with Bill and they become a romantic couple. After few months, Adrian is hospitalized for having contractions too early. A short time later, Bill asks her to marry with him. She accepts his proposal, but makes it clear that she is still not over her marriage with Steven. On Christmas Eve, Adrian gives birth to a boy, who she names Sam. Steven agrees to see him and admits that he wants to renew their relationship for their child's sake. Adrian, however, rejects him. Bill, having seen Steven with her, keeps his distance. They are reunited and married in the end, when Adrian assures him that he is the only one for her.
That is how the story touches the heartbeat of two people and tell you their love story. Story about their past and marriage, the novel is well written. The story is good, but too predictable. It is a bit dramatic as well. The moral value from this story is for all lovers that love between couples is never enough for marriage but there should be well-understanding and agreement to each other. We know that Bill and Adrian have collapsed with their first marriage because it has not agreement between them. Especially in Adrian's marriage, her husband is very selfish. He does not think what Adrian feels when he want to divorce her because she gets pregnant, and he want to his marriage back. Adrian dissapointed and said :
"Love. It was the one thing i think you forgot entirely in our marriage. If you had love me, you wouldn't have walked out me and my baby." (Steel : 389)
So, I recommend this Novel for the one, who like to read love story. For me, the book is really good. I like the way how presented the story, the love shown between the two main characters is beautiful.
