FarCry 5 - Game Reviews - #1 - The Most Beautiful Looking Game EVER & The BEST Story!!!
Massive open world, Awesome narrative, Lots of content, Fantastic Graphics... what more could you ask for?
Last night you may have captured my stream of Play Time - FarCry 5 – First Play #1 where I played the new FarCry 5 for the very first time.... even though I have only played 2-3 hours of the game, I am very, very impressed with it so far. In particular I am liking the story so far into the game and the gorgeous graphics.
Narrative.
- The entire game is based in a fictional American location in Montana called, Hope County. It has been ''overtaken'', if you will, by a preacher named, Joseph Seed, and his immediate family run various parts of the county which include supplies, militia training and such.
Joseph Seed believes that he has been chosen by God to protect, guide and watch over the people in Hope County and has a congregation which he called 'Project Eden's Gate'. This is all based around the idea that Joseph Seed will lead the people of Hope County to salvation. Basically, the dude has gone slightly nuts and has created a cult that is armed and will basically do anything he says. And that Cult has 'A LOT' of members.
The story starts out with you who is a rookie deputy, another Deputy, A Sheriff of Hope County, and a US Marshal who has a warrant for Joseph Seeds arrest, for kidnapping with the intent to harm. You all fly into the main complex by helicopter where Joseph's congregation and armed militia is primarily located. It all starts out nice and quite, but when you return to the helicopter and attempt to leave with Joseph in cuffs, his congregation all attack the helicopter (you have to see it) causing it to crash and with you left by yourself, you have to escape, ending up in a bunker where you basically start the missions side of the game.
So far I have only completed a few missions, but the overall experience of the story is insanely good. Think GTA San Andreas' story on steroids. I would even go as far as saying, it is on par with Rise of the Tomb Raider narrative. It is very gripping and it leaves you wanting more, and as soon as I am done writing this, I will be back in Hope County taking out some more bad guys and doing some more epic missions.
Acting.
- While in the cinemas we have some awesome films to watch that have some incredible acting, but when you compare them types of movies to what you hear and see in games like this one... they don't even come close to the quality that the developers and actors put into there performances.
Game technology has indeed come along way, with most triple A games such as this one, using some form of motion capture. In this game, Ubisoft have used full body motion capture combined with full facial capture also. This all adds up to some of the most realistic looking movements and mechanics in the game that could be easily mistaken for the real thing. Everything about how the characters move is very fluidic. This same detail is not just limited to the main 'cast' of characters in the game, but also the NPC's (Non Player Characters). They all have a very unique movement. Despite the fact that the NPC's are essentially 'copied and pasted' throughout the game, because of the range of movements they have, it is actually very hard to compare any 2 side by side. This is a testament to the work that goes into the development of all the characters in the game. And the amount of motion capture they would have had to do in order to achieve this must be insane.
The Movement acting is very good indeed, but the voice acting is next level. When watching the cut scenes, or even when free roaming and talking to the characters while playing, combining the facial capture has made something truly great. You can hear the emotion s that the characters are conveying across to you, the player. It gives you that sense of immersion and makes you actually feel as though you are indeed a part of the story. My hat goes off to all the actors and actresses. Never before have I heard or seen acting this good within a game.
Graphics.
- Although Ubisoft's Uplay software is horrible and there customer service is questionable at times, there is no doubt in my mind that the developers from Ubisoft Montreal have created an awe inspiring game engine that is behind all the FarCry games, except the first.
The Dunia Engine that powers the game is loosely based on Cryteks, CryEngine 1, which was used on the first FarCry Game and the first Crysis game also. That same Dunia engine was the base of the Avatar Game based on the movie of the same name. Now that is an impressive resume'.
Moving onto the graphics, WOW! That is all I can say. As mentioned earlier, the devs used some impressive motion capture of the actors, including facial motion capture. Combine this with some fantastic looking graphics, the result is something truly special. Every emotion is perfectly captured and conveyed over to the player, it is very easy to see when a character is angry, upset, nervous or happy. If it wasn't for very, and I mean very subtle imperfections in the graphic quality, mainly light tracing, you could be forgiven for thinking that it is real and not animated.
The textures used on the characters are extremely detailed. Clothes have the right amount of texture and transparency when appropriate. That same attention to detail is also recognizable in the environment and all the assets from the big rigs, to the rubbish on the floor, to the individual grass blades to the water... everything is so meticulously detailed it is unbelievable.
For this generation of graphical fidelity, I believe that Ubisoft and the team behind this game have peeked, reaching the limit of what is possible with current hardware and software engineering. They have used every type of graphical trick in the book to achieve what they have done in this game... Volumetric Lighting, Dynamic Weather, Dynamic Fire Propagation, Full 24 hour cycles, UN-Scripted AI, Radiosity, Deferd Radiance, and a whole host of others that have made this game the best looking one to date!
Everything has come together to create a visually orgasmic experience that enhances the already enticing narrative and gameplay.
Game Play
- The gameplay is something that does take a short while to get used too, even more so if you are using a keyboard and mouse like I was. It may be a little bit of a trial and error before you get used to the key positions. But once you have overcome this small learning curve, the game play is very fluid and comes very naturally to the player. The smoothness of the controls add to that immersive nature that the game radiates in every other aspect.
The fighting and weapon mechanics are also something to admire with very good kick back and recoil with the weapons firing, even the small ''Hold Breath'' mechanic to steady your aim is a brilliant edition to the weaponry. Close quarters combat and the stealth take downs are all very well presented. There are various versions of this mechanic that depends on what type of weapon, if any, you are using at the time, which I find to be refreshing over the usual repetitiveness that can be found in countless other games.
The weapon wheel is very reminiscent of the one found in GTA V. even though it is almost identical, it works just as well.
The only thing I don't like is when you go to loot a dead body. If you have a main weapon, it will come up with ''E to Swap'' and that same ''E'' is used for looting too. There is no way to change it unfortunately so I ended up constantly trading my bow for a rifle all too often when I wanted to keep my bow as my main weapon. I suppose this could be fixed in a future patch maybe? But regardless of this small criticism, everything else about the actual playability of the game is spot on.
The open world is massive. As I have said, I have only played 2-3 hours so far, and I have only uncovered a small fraction of the total map, and so far it has been full of content, with collectables, looting, destroying enemy outposts, road blocks, gun shop, garage, bar, even a bloody arcade game you can play in the bar. I know that idea was taken straight from GTA V, but it is still impressive non the less as there is always something for you to do. When streaming/playing last night, I found myself a little overwhelmed with the content as at one point, I struggled to decide what to do next. Not to say that is a bad thing, if anything, its the total opposite. If you are struggling as to what you should do in a game, you know that the content is good enough to distract you away from the main missions / Story. And the Devs have pulled this off flawlessly.
Downsides?
- Apart from looting bodies that have a weapon close by, causing you to accidentally switch your main weapon, there isn't really anything bad I can say about the game. There are a couple of things that are heavily based on or inspired by GTA V, but they are also very different.
I suppose the only thing I would say is that it would be nice to have a 3rd person, over the shoulder perspective of the character you are playing instead of the strict first person. But that is just me.
Conclusion.
- What else can I say? The game is awesome! Every part of the game is designed in such a way that it sucks you in even further to create a very immersive experience that is not only enjoyable to play, but you also make an emotional connection to the characters. This type of immersion has only ever been seen in the Mass Effect Trilogy when you make critical decisions that effect the outcome of the game. Only FarCry has done it better.
Ubisoft as a company sucks. But the Devs powering the company make it worth while. Creating a game such as this is incredible!
It is the best graphically designed and narrative driven game that I have played to date. I would score it close to a perfect 10 out of 10 on every aspect of the game and recommend anyone who likes a narrative driven game to go and get a copy and start playing it straight away.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to play some more FarCry 5!
Thanks for reading.
