The righteousness of Jesus: A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. Luke 10:30
The spiritual gift of righteousness, the golden rule (Matthew 7:12), is one of the most important spiritual concepts in the doctrine of the Kingdom of God, and Jesus was always very insistent on this teaching. And this is so because there are two paths and two rewards, and this is an explanation that comes from the sapiential literature, with Psalm 1, the Psalm of the two paths. Righteousness and sin as paths are solutions to human behavior.
And Jesus, in teaching about the Kingdom of God to his listeners with mysterious parables, gave an instruction on this subject, and that is the parable of the Good Samaritan, which appears only in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 10:25-37). Although the parable may seem very simple to interpret, it actually possesses a profound spiritual content for daily life. At first glance, the parable seems like a fantastical tale related to mercy (compassion, gentleness, kindness) and spiritual love (Agape) towards one's neighbor, but it is more than that. The divine master began his story with these wise words: "A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road" Luke 10:30.
Then the story continues, and Jesus explained that a priest and a Levite saw the man being robbed on the side of the road and passed by. With these examples, Jesus showed the typical actions of people driven by concupiscence, the lack of empathy makes helping others meaningless, and as a consequence of this, sinful behavior.
But then Jesus explained the opposite behavior, and he did so by mentioning a Samaritan who was moved by the situation, put him on his donkey, and took him to an inn, where he paid for his lodging, and then the Samaritan went on his way. The Samaritan, unlike the previous examples, acted with righteousness for a simple reason: because for those who fear God, their neighbor matters.
With this example, Jesus made it clear that every person in the world must inevitably choose between the path of the Levite and the path of the Good Samaritan; there is no middle ground. Entering the Kingdom of God is therefore a fundamental, radical choice, because masks fall off sooner or later, and men are rewarded or punished for their actions sooner or later.
