Sometimes the Hares play a trick on all of us

in #running5 days ago

This past week on Thursday we were promised by a Hare - which are the people who go out during the week and mark a trail for the rest of us - that we would have a Wimp/Rambo trail this week.

This means that there are actually 2 trails. One of them is meant to be longer and harder and this is the Rambo trail. The other is meant to be quite short and easy and this, obviously, is the Wimp trail.

But "Dyke Converter" one of our primary Hares at the moment, had a funny little trick in store for us on on this particular run in the jungle.

So the two teams of wimps or rambos made their choice about which trail they were going to take. We were told by the Hares that the Rambo trail was going to be around 7km and the wimp trail was going to be 3.

What we got instead was a trail that was clearly designed to reward the people with the balls to do the Rambo trail because there was a "beer stop" at right around 2km. Also, the terrain never became very difficult and certainly didn't warrant the Rambo designation. By the end of it, most of the Rambos actually ended up making it back to camp before a majority of the Wimps did. This was pretty funny but we also need to understand that these sorts of pranks are harmless. Now if he had intentionally put the wimps on a difficult trail there would be a problem. Some of our "wimps" are just old dudes and one of them has to walk with a cane. If anyone had put "Tiptoe" on intentionally difficult terrain there would have been hell to pay.

But this prank was fine because neither of the trails were actually long or difficult. Some of the more veteran members like myself thought this was a strange area to have a Rambo trail, because most of the area, although elevated, is still quite flat. There was only about a 100 foot difference in elevation between the lowest and highest point of either trail.

We also were not told that there would be a beer stop and in case you don't know what that is it is just a guy sitting on the side of the trail with a cooler filled with ice-cold beers and other things like water. We didn't expect this at all, let alone before most of us were even able to work up a real sweat at the 2km mark.

People had a lot of laughs about this as the wimps normally expect to return to the starting point quite some time before the Rambos do because normally there is at least 2 km of rather grueling trail that is put on top for the Rambos.

"Dyke Converter" was always a bit of a joker, and that is why he takes charge of the circle on a regular basis. It gets more and more complicated to pull off pranks without anyone knowing about it, but he got all of us pretty good this time.

There were some points where it appeared as though it could rain but it held off and we got lucky. As we move closer to the depths of rainy season it will become a lot more likely that we are going to get rained on a lot, so prepare accordingly in the future. I always say to just bring another shirt and perhaps a change of socks. We are not entering a time of year where it will ever be cold but I don't particularly enjoy being soaking wet for long periods of time while sitting.

We are doing mixed runs on Thursday and Friday every week and men only runs on Monday. All are welcome and membership is not required. All you need to do is have a decent attitude, semi-functioning legs, and be available from 4-8 pm on any of those days.
