The Saturday Hash: Our most popular co-ed experience in Chiang Mai

in #running4 months ago

Due to tradition alone, there is a men only event that takes place on Monday's. This is purely because of the fact that the original Hash House Harriers group in Kuala Lumpur was almost entirely soldiers stationed there and the event was meant to be something to "work off the weekend's excess." It was a different time so women were strictly prohibited from attending. This was nearly 100 years ago but once again, it is only out of tradition, not sexism, that we keep this alive here in Chiang Mai. Other countries have laws against this sort of thing but we don't live in USA and we can do whatever we want here. Trust me, with our women only Hash events and the fact that we have two co-ed events per week as well as all of our major events being open to everyone, we aren't exactly discriminating. The Monday Hash is also the least popular because roughly half of our members are not allowed to attend and we also have some people that work and cannot be there on a Monday anyway.

The co-ed Thursday even, which is open to everyone, also suffers from working people not being able to attend. Therefore, the Saturday events tend to be our most popular.

Rain or shine, mud or desert-like earth, these runs happen every single week with the only exception being the times during Covid where nobody was supposed to be gathering in groups at all anywhere. We still did, but started to feel a bit silly about how we were breaking the law - even if we all thought it was a stupid law - in order to get out and have some fun. It would have been truly stupid to give our group a bad name with the police and the community as it almost certainly would have made the news that a group of foreigners were defying the rulings of the city and country. But enough about that.

Saturdays are the best days for a lot of people and especially for new people to come and join us. While we don't always make posters for our events here is one of them from a recent run.

one thing to understand about this poster is that "Alice" is actually a man and has been a Hasher for so long that I don't even know how he ended up with that name. You are not supposed to discuss how you got your name and if you do so, you will be put on the ice for revealing it. To be fair you will be put on the ice for not revealing how you got your name as well so just do whatever you want.

Our Saturday events have the largest crowds normally and all of them are very attractive men and women as the above picture clearly shows. One of our longest-standing female members is actually, at least in my opinion, one of the best Hares that we have in our group. All of the trails that she sets are excellent, with my top 2 of all time being both done by her.

Since the Hash members of Chiang Mai read these postings I am quite certain that I will be put on the ice multiple times simply for saying what I did above but go ahead guys and girls! I'm ready for it! Your ice and threats of "making" me drink a cup of beer to not scare me.

So if you are new to the Hash House Harriers or even if you have never done it before, the Saturday Hash in Chiang Mai would probably be your best bet for a starting point. Everyone is very welcoming on all of our meetups but Saturday's seem to be slightly more inviting somehow. We are still doing 3 runs per week minimum and you are welcome to join us at almost all of our events. I promise it will change your life for the better. Full details of all upcoming events can be found at our barely functioning and poorly made official website.

On on!
